Vanguard pulls in 6.2 million organic visits every month from the US alone. It holds 48,000 keywords in the top three positions on Google. Its AI visibility score sits at 85 out of 100. AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, and AI Overviews are citing pages from its website in response to 74,500 prompts.

That is not just brand size at work. Plenty of household-name brands fall flat in search because their digital marketing strategy does not match their reputation.

But Vanguard is different. Its search dominance is built on a deliberate Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Content Marketing strategy, and most of it is something any marketing team can replicate.

Tim Cameron-Kitchen, Founder of Exposure Ninja, breaks down Vanguard’s marketing strategy and the lessons you can take into your own marketing.

Get to the top of Google

Learn how to get your website to the very top of Google (and turn that traffic into revenue).

Vanguard’s Marketing Strategy Starts With the Customer, Not the Product

Before any content strategy, any topic cluster, or any AI Search Optimisation tactic, Vanguard does one thing exceptionally well: it positions everything around the customer.

Tim Cameron-Kitchen explains why this is the foundation everything else is built on: “Vanguard has positioned their entire website around the benefits and the goals that people want to achieve from their products. They are not talking about their products.”

Look at the homepage. “You deserve investing advice from a true partner.” “Prep for retirement.” “Save for school.” “Plan your estate.” Every line points at what the visitor wants, not what Vanguard sells. Compare that with a competitor like Schwab, whose homepage leads with “Your Schwab relationship elevated” and product listings. As Tim Cameron-Kitchen puts it: “That’s how so many marketers present their business. They work out what are the things that we want to sell, and let’s present them on our shop front.”

Vanguard takes the opposite approach. Rather than laying products on a table, it creates distinct doors for visitors to walk through based on their goals, then introduces products in the context of how they help that person get where they want to go.

This matters for AI Search specifically because people talk to AI tools the way they would talk to a financial adviser. They describe a goal or a problem. If your content is structured around products rather than goals, it will not match those queries.

“When people are talking to AI tools, they are often talking about their problem or their goal. So Vanguard, by positioning everything around the user, is already ahead of the curve,” adds Tim Cameron-Kitchen.

The Content Strategy Behind 6.2 Million Monthly Visits

Vanguard’s traffic volume is not an accident. It is the result of covering core financial topics with serious depth, and doing so in a way that serves both human readers and AI tools.

Tim Cameron-Kitchen points to a specific content structure that runs through nearly every Vanguard article: “We’ve got a Key Takeaways section, which is great for users with short attention spans, and AI tools love it as well, because they can just rip these bullet points and rewrite them and put them in their AI answers.”

Each article starts with a clear heading, a summary or key takeaways section, structured tables where relevant, and questions written in the customer’s voice. These are not stylistic choices. They are structural signals that AI platforms use to identify citable, trustworthy content.

But the bigger strategic play is topical depth. Rather than publishing one article about IRAs, Vanguard covers spousal IRAs, backdoor Roth IRA conversions, the difference between traditional and Roth IRAs, and dozens of other subtopics. Every angle a prospective investor might research has a dedicated piece of content.

As Tim Cameron-Kitchen puts it: “Whatever subtopic you have about IRAs, Vanguard has produced some content on it.”

This topic cluster approach means users stay on the Vanguard website longer, rabbit-holing from one piece to the next. And because every sub-query about a topic is answered on the site, AI tools keep citing Vanguard pages in their responses.

This approach works immensely well for users because it means they can really rabbit hole on your content. They can get stuck in, click through. Before they know it, they’ve learned everything that they know about this topic from your website. But it also works really well for AI Search because it means that whatever sub-query somebody has about your topic, you’ve got a content piece answering it.

How Vanguard Turns Educational Content Into Revenue

Here is a problem Tim Cameron-Kitchen sees constantly: businesses with content that ranks and gets cited, but they generate zero revenue.

“There are loads of businesses out there with content that’s ranking and being cited, but when someone lands on it, nothing happens. The traffic that was coming to the content section of their website wasn’t generating any revenue. And when I say wasn’t generating any revenue, I mean, like, zero revenue.”

Vanguard solves this with contextually relevant calls to action (CTAs) placed throughout every article. On a page about Roth IRAs, the CTAs link to “learn the difference between traditional and Roth IRAs” and “save with a Vanguard IRA.” Each one is relevant to what that reader is already thinking about. Each one nudges them one step closer to opening an account.

As Tim Cameron-Kitchen puts it: “It sounds so logical, but so few businesses do it, and they end up with vast amounts of traffic that’s driving little to no revenue.”

Beyond in-article CTAs, Vanguard also deploys interactive calculators as strategic content assets. Its retirement income calculator has earned links from CNBC, Yahoo Finance, Morningstar, and Investopedia. The page attracts 74,000 visits a month. At its peak, it was pulling in over 100,000 monthly visits to a single page.

Tools like this work because they help users move themselves along the buying journey without needing to speak to anyone. They also attract natural backlinks from high-authority publications, which reinforces the search and AI visibility that makes the whole strategy work.

Calculators and software tools are an amazing asset to help educate people on your website so that they can move themselves along the journey and get closer to buying without having to talk to anyone on your team. But also they can be an absolute link magnet.

7 Lessons Any Marketer Can Take From Vanguard’s Marketing Strategy

You do not need Vanguard’s budget or brand recognition to apply these principles. Tim Cameron-Kitchen identifies seven specific lessons:

  1. Build content around your customer’s goals, not your products and services.
  2. Structure your website around customer journeys, so every door a visitor walks through leads them toward their goal.
  3. Educational content builds credibility and earns trust before someone is ready to buy.
  4. AI Search rewards trusted entities that are cited widely online and publish well-structured content.
  5. Tools and calculators are strategic search assets that attract backlinks, rankings, and traffic.
  6. Topical depth beats topical breadth: go deep on fewer topics rather than thin across many.
  7. Brand trust amplifies SEO, but only if the content foundation and technical SEO are already in place.

If your business is starting from a lower base, the answer is not to try to cover everything at once. As Tim Cameron-Kitchen puts it: “You pick one particular customer segment you know you can serve really well, and you go deep in that content area. You can start to dominate for that customer segment and then move on.”
