Ask a marketing leader how much traffic and how many leads come from AI Search platforms like ChatGPT, and you’ll usually get a pause, followed by “we don’t really know.” This is the AI attribution gap, and it’s a problem facing every business right now.

Charlie Marchant, CEO of Exposure Ninja, breaks down why this AI attribution gap exists and what you can do about it, even without perfect data.

Why The AI Attribution Gap Exists

The tools marketers have relied on for decades weren’t built to track AI platforms. That leaves a genuine blind spot in the data, right at a moment when AI Search is becoming impossible to ignore.

“The tools that we’ve been using for decades just don’t give us all of the data about our customer touchpoints, so we don’t know exactly which platforms people researched on and actually interacted with before they convert to become a lead or a customer for our business,” as Charlie Marchant puts it.

This matters commercially, not just technically. Without clear data, it’s hard to justify AI Search investment to a CFO or board that wants proof before signing off on spend.

Why Dark Traffic Hides Your AI Search Performance

Even when someone comes to your site from an AI platform, that visit isn’t always visible in your analytics. Charlie Marchant calls this dark traffic, and it’s the main reason the gap keeps growing.

“What happens most of the time, however, is what we call dark traffic, when ChatGPT doesn’t link the brand, and actually someone might copy and paste their name into Google or search for them later, and we’re unable to see that a visitor came to our website directly from ChatGPT or another AI platform.”

“That’s what’s causing this huge gap, this rift in our data,” Charlie Marchant explains.

None of the current fixes are perfect, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do.

Three Practical Ways To Start Closing The Gap

“There are a couple of practical options for what you can do about this, and none of them are perfect. They’re just the best that we have with what we have right now,” explains Charlie Marchant.

Charlie Marchant sets out a few concrete steps marketing teams can take today:

  1. Set Up Your Google Analytics 4 (GA4): You can start to track AI traffic in GA4 with a channel group so that you can see specific traffic that is coming from those platforms.
  2. Track Direct Traffic: The second step is tracking direct traffic trends over time. A sharp increase can be a strong signal that AI platforms are influencing more of your customer journeys than your reports currently show.
  3. Monitor Visibility in AI Platforms: The third is monitoring your AI visibility directly inside AI platforms. You can do this manually by searching your business and your key commercial terms in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, or use AI visibility tools built for the job, like Peec.AI or Profound, to track it consistently.

The Simplest Fix: Just Ask Your Customers

For all the tools and workarounds, Charlie Marchant is clear that the most reliable method is also the simplest: “The absolute best way to measure this is just to ask your customers, to have a form on your website that says, ‘Where did you hear about us?'”

“This is a really super simple thing to add into a form, and incredibly effective,” Charlie Marchant notes.

Include a dropdown with AI platforms, and add a free text field for anything that doesn’t fit.

“If you have a sales team who interact with a lead once they come through your website, you can also have them ask directly. On your form, make sure that you have a dropdown that gives them different options, and include something like ChatGPT and AI platforms.”

The AI attribution gap isn’t going away soon, but you don’t need perfect data to start making better decisions with what you have.
