Remote work isn’t just a perk. It’s a competitive advantage. On 28 April 2025, our CEO Charlie Marchant took that message to the House of Lords.
Charlie Marchant joined a panel of UK employers at the Palace of Westminster as part of the House of Lords inquiry into the future of remote and hybrid working. The panel explored how flexible work impacts productivity, inclusivity, and employee wellbeing, as well as what it means for the UK’s economic growth, carbon goals, and employment future.
“Remote and flexible working is something we’ve built our entire agency around, and seeing it recognised on a national stage like this was amazing,” says Charlie Marchant. “I’m proud that our experience can help shape real policy.”
At Exposure Ninja, we’ve been fully remote since 2011. In that time, we’ve learned how remote work can fuel high performance, support diverse teams, and drive sustainable growth.
Why We Were Invited To Speak At The House of Lords
Earlier this year, the House of Lords launched a Call for Evidence into the future of remote and hybrid working in the UK. They wanted to gather first-hand insight from organisations across sectors to inform future government policy.
We submitted detailed written evidence based on more than a decade of running a fully remote business. Here is some of what we shared:
Productivity and Wellbeing
Our data shows that remote work, when supported properly, leads to faster task completion and stronger employee well-being.
- In our 2024 internal survey, 81% of our team said they’d recommend Exposure Ninja as a great place to work.
- Our time-tracking tools help ensure employees don’t unintentionally work beyond their hours, protecting against burnout.
- Structured wellness initiatives, like our annual Wellness Week, Manual of Me documents, and regular 1:1s, keep teams engaged and supported.
Inclusion and Access
We showed how remote work opens doors to those traditionally excluded from office-based jobs or those who find this setup more difficult. For example, 36% of our team identify as caregivers to either children or adults, and our remote policy allows them to thrive professionally while managing responsibilities at home.
“I simply couldn’t do my job to the best of my ability without flexible working. Being able to work around the symptoms of my fibromyalgia, means I can produce the quality of work I know I’m capable of.” — Exposure Ninja employee.
Recruitment
Remote work allows employers to hire from a diverse talent pool. For example, we’ll receive 250+ applicants per role, ensuring we can find the best fit for our company and clients. Plus, the remote and flexible setup of our business is often cited as a motivating reason for the application.
Employee Retention
We proudly maintained a retention rate of 88% in 2024, which is 23% higher than the UK average. In our annual Happiness Survey, many employees appreciated the flexibility and autonomy that our remote work setup provides.
“Working remotely at Exposure Ninja means I can see my daughter for hours per day instead of minutes, thanks to not having to commute. Love Exposure Ninja’s 100% remote policy and always will.” — Exposure Ninja employee.
Our Main Message to Parliament: Remote Work Works
Our core message to Parliament was simple: remote work, when supported by strong processes and a clear culture, drives better outcomes for businesses, workers, and the economy.
“The government should encourage remote work where it works,” said Charlie Marchant during the panel. “There is a lot of implication that people may take advantage of remote systems. This idea doesn’t match our experience. Actually, the vast majority of people who work remotely want to do excellent work, be a part of the workforce, and contribute to the economy, and I think it’s important that they have the opportunity to do so.”
Remote work isn’t a compromise. We’ve proven it’s a competitive advantage.
We’ve scaled a multi-channel marketing agency to 70+ people without a single square foot of office space. Along the way, we’ve:
- Scaled faster by removing location limits on talent.
- Been a two-time winner at the 2024 Global Agency Awards for Best Flexible Working Policy and Best Culture Transformation Initiative.
- Developed structured processes for onboarding, wellness, and career growth that support high performance and employee happiness.
What Happens Next?
The insights shared by Charlie Marchant and the other panellists will feed directly into national recommendations on the future of work, including potential updates to workplace legislation, investment in digital infrastructure, and SME support. This inquiry could influence everything from employee rights to rural job access to carbon policy.
We’re proud that Exposure Ninja’s real-world experience is part of that process. We’ll keep advocating for remote work done right — because we know that when it’s backed by structure, data, and intention, it works in our sector.
