Most marketing teams can now see that AI Search is driving traffic. What they can’t do is prove it’s driving revenue.
That gap is costing marketers credibility with leadership and budget.
ChatGPT traffic converts 31% higher than non-branded organic search. 80% of people say at least half of their purchase decisions now happen inside AI tools. The commercial case for AI visibility is already there. The problem is that traditional attribution wasn’t built to see it.
AI-referred sessions are hiding in your Direct channel. Branded uplifts go unexplained. Leads appear with no clear origin. When finance asks what your AI Search investment is actually returning, the honest answer for most teams is: “We don’t know yet.”
In a recent webinar, Exposure Ninja CEO Charlie Marchant was joined by Jaime De Botton, Senior Partner Development Manager UKI at HubSpot, to walk through the framework marketing leaders are using to connect AI visibility to closed revenue, and to show you the tools already inside HubSpot to make it happen.

Why AI Search Visibility Now Decides Who Wins The Sale
Buying behaviour has changed faster than most reporting dashboards have kept up with. Charlie Marchant explains why brands can no longer treat AI platforms as an afterthought. “What we know already is that 80% of people say at least half of their purchase decisions are made within AI tools.”
As Charlie Marchant puts it, “ChatGPT traffic converts around 30% higher than non-branded organic traffic.”
This matters commercially. If AI-referred traffic converts better than standard organic traffic, then losing visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity is a direct hit to pipeline.
“ChatGPT and AI Overviews recommending competitors instead of you. This is not what we want for our businesses, and one of the things we’re looking to solve. Your Google traffic may not be what it once was. Lots of brands have seen huge changes in their Google traffic since AI became much bigger, much more used,” adds Charlie Marchant.
Why Traditional Attribution Misses AI Traffic (And How To Fix It)
Most Google Analytics setups are missing the majority of AI-driven activity, and Charlie Marchant is upfront that there is no perfect fix yet. But there is a lot marketing teams can do to close the gap.
“So what Google Analytics might be seeing is it might see some of that referral traffic we were just talking about, but you’re likely to also be seeing direct traffic spikes. This is extremely common.”
This is called dark traffic. A buyer gets an answer from ChatGPT or Gemini, sees your brand recommended or cited, then opens a new tab and types your brand name straight into Google rather than clicking through. GA4 has no way of tying that session back to the original AI conversation, so it lands as direct traffic or branded search with no clear source.
“It might be that ChatGPT is recommending your brand, or Perplexity is citing your content, or you’re featured in Google AI Overviews. But rather than clicking directly through, buyers are actually typing your brand name into Google instead to find you. Which of course makes attribution difficult,” explains Charlie Marchant.
The fix in three steps:
- Set up a custom channel group in GA4 to isolate AI referral traffic, so you can at least see ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity separately from your existing channels.
- Compare direct traffic and branded search now against 2023, before AI tools were mainstream. A spike with no obvious cause is a strong signal that AI is influencing buyers even where it cannot be directly attributed.
- Add “AI platform” as an option to your website’s “where did you hear about us” field, so sales and marketing can see self-reported AI influence sitting inside the CRM alongside every other lead source.
None of this gives 100% attribution. But it moves AI Search visibility from a guess to a tracked, reportable trend that marketing leaders can take to their board.
The Five Metrics That Connect AI Visibility To Pipeline
Once a baseline is in place, five specific metrics link AI Search visibility to revenue:
- Citation Rate: How often your brand is cited across the prompts you have chosen to track. This is your baseline visibility score.
- AI Share of Voice: How you stack up against named competitors on the searches that matter commercially.
- AI Attributed Traffic: AI-referred sessions plus the branded direct traffic spikes that point to AI influence, connecting visibility to actual website behaviour.
- Lead Source: The percentage of new contacts self-reporting or data-matched to an AI platform, so sales can see AI influenced leads inside the CRM rather than a separate spreadsheet.
- Closed Revenue: Deal source and revenue by acquisition channel, showing whether AI influenced deals close at the same rate, a higher rate, or a lower rate than everything else in the pipeline.
Connecting AI Search Visibility To Revenue In HubSpot
Once you know what to measure, the next question every marketing leader asks is where to actually track it. HubSpot AEO, built into Marketing Hub, is designed to answer that without adding another platform to your stack.
It starts with visibility. Citation rate and AI Share of Voice show how often your brand comes up in AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity against named competitors, on the specific prompts you’ve flagged as commercially important.
Revenue is where it gets especially useful. A property called AI referrals sits inside your standard traffic reports, showing sessions coming from AI platforms. From there, custom reports combine AI referrals with deal count, pipeline progression, and win rate. That gives you the number that actually matters: whether AI-referred deals are closing.
This is the report that turns “we’re doing AI Search” into a defensible line item.
