Influencer marketing is a type of advertising that relies upon people with significant social clout to advertise a business’s services or products in the form of endorsements, reviews, or product placement.

Before the invention of social media marketing, companies would approach celebrities and pay them to appear in their adverts. The high profile and glamour of these celebrities would draw the attention of their fans to the adverts, increasing brand awareness.

The companies, or their advertising agency, would have complete creative control of the ads.

Today, creative control is in the hands of not just celebrities, but anyone with a large enough audience, or “following”, on social media.

Businesses that want to reach their target market are now paying social media influencers to promote their business’s services or products within their updates.

The type of promotion varies depending on the type of social media account. One account may create very clearly sponsored reviews of products, whereas others will do product placement (putting products in the background of their regular updates).

Product giveaways are also common in influencer marketing, using competition rules (such as following a brand’s account for a chance to win) to increase brand visibility — and paying the influencer for the opportunity to reach their audience.

Some companies will go further, creating new products in partnership with the influencers and run long-term ambassador programmes with influencers in exchange for regular promotional content.

With worldwide internet users spending an average of 144 minutes per day using social media, influencer marketing is a brilliant way for companies to increase brand exposure, traffic, leads, and sales.

On average, people use their phones 2,617 times a day. National averages for the time spent on social media vary between 143 minutes and 233 minutes per day.

Influencer marketing, allows businesses to reach specific highly-engaged audiences that are following a social media account for specific reasons by leveraging the authority and audiences of relevant social influencers. For example, Henry and Ian, of the vegan cooking channel, BOSH, post daily recipe videos on their Instagram account. Occasionally, the pair will share a recipe with a featured product — such as in the example below where the vegetable margarine company, Vitalite, paid the pair to run a competition and post several updates featuring their product.

BOSH’s followers will have been far more interested in the recipe than the product featured in the video. But when those followers next need margarine, Vitalite will most likely be the brand at the front of their minds — whether they remember that BOSH featured it or not.

This isn’t just limited to food accounts. Influencer marketing is suitable for any business that has an interesting product – particularly if it is visually appealing.

People buy the products because they have particular interests that the accounts satisfy — and they trust the people running the accounts enough to try the products.

This trust and access to highly-engaged people is the reason why businesses need influencer marketing as a part of their content marketing campaign.

Just take a look at the #ad hashtag on Instagram for a glimpse at the level of engagement businesses are earning by working with influencers.

The truth about social media success is that it’s rarely a real “overnight success”.

When you see social media accounts “exploding” suddenly there’s usually a lot of preplanning beforehand to make sure the execution is perfect — and the results equally so.

Influencer marketing takes research, organised development, and solid execution. Only by finding the right influencers, using the right type of content, and making sure it launches and runs the way it should do, are social campaigns successful.
